Guwahati: The Assam Civil Society has voiced strong concern over what it termed as growing intolerance towards the media and opposition voices, alleging that recent developments following the conclusion of polling have raised serious questions about democratic conduct in the state.
In a statement, the organisation criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his remarks and actions targeting sections of the media and opposition candidates, stating that such conduct runs counter to democratic values and established traditions in Assam and the country.
The civil society group also expressed apprehension over the functioning of the Election Commission of India, suggesting that certain actions have cast doubts on its impartial image. It noted that although the state administration is currently operating under the Commission’s mandate during the election period, the alleged harassment and discriminatory treatment of opposition candidates have led to public concern over the neutrality of the poll body.
Specifically, the organisation referred to cases involving opposition leaders such as Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Kunki Chowdhury, claiming that they and their supporters have faced undue pressure. It further alleged that while stringent measures have been taken against Chowdhury in connection with an election-related case, no comparable action has been initiated on complaints filed by her.
The Assam Civil Society also condemned what it described as “vindictive remarks” made by the Chief Minister against media outlets, including Asomiya Pratidin and DY365, as well as certain digital news platforms and members of Chowdhury’s family.
Calling for restraint, the organisation urged the Chief Minister to refrain from such statements and actions, stressing the need to uphold democratic norms.
At the same time, it appealed to opposition parties and their supporters to remain vigilant and avoid reacting to any provocation, in order to maintain peace and stability in the post-poll period.
The statement comes amid heightened political tensions in Assam following the conclusion of voting for the 2026 Assembly elections.
