After the arrest of Dhubri‘s deputy superintendent of police (border) Jatin Ch. Das on May 31, 2021, an official of the Dhubri district transport department has been arrested by the CID of Assam Police on corruption charges.

The arrested official has been identified as Ariful Islam, who was serving as an Assistant enforcement Inspector at the Dhubri district transport office for many years.

Sources said Islam was called as part of an investigation on Thursday by the CID and after hours-long interrogation, he was finally been arrested.

He was produced before the competent court in Guwahati and was sent to judicial custody on Friday.

The CID initiated an inquiry against illegal trades like cattle smuggling, drugs, sand and stone syndicate through the inter-state and international border in Dhubri district, said sources.

The Dhubri Police in mid-May seized a total of 122 overloaded dumpers from Chagilia across the inter-state border with West Bengal.

After finding anomalies during an investigation, the Dhubri Police filed a complaint against the officers, who were responsible for checking the trucks.

Dhubri DSP (border) Jatin Ch. Das was arrested by Dhubri Police on May 31, 2021 after finding his involvement in the case.

Based on specific information about the alleged nexus of the accused police officer, Jatin Ch Das with cattle and drugs smugglers, the Dhubri Police launched raids in several places of the district and arrested the DSP following the arrest of one of his collection agents, Rafiqul Pramanik.

Subsequently, Das was arrested and unaccounted cash of Rs 4.77 lakh was recovered from his possession.

A case, bearing No 881/2021 under the Prevention of Corruption Act, has been registered with the Dhubri police station.

District transport department sources said Ariful Islam recently donated his one month’s salary to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and was in Guwahati on medical leave.
