The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (AACSU) staged a ‘dharna’ in front of the Lakhimpur DC office at North Lakhimpur on Wednesday demanding scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and unconditional release of their arrested leaders.

The Lakhimpur district unit of AACSU demanded immediate and unconditional release of AACSU general secretary Mahen Bora, who was arrested on Tuesday.

The general secretary of the All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (AACSU), Mahen Bora was arrested by police at Golaghat while he was leading the activists of the organization in support of the 11-hour bandh against the Bill.

The 11-hour bandh, called by the North East Students’ Union (NESO), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), was supported by 30 other organizations including AACSU against the Citizenship (Amendment), Bill, 2016.

The Lakhimpur district committee of the AACSU later handed over a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through the district administration demanding release of the arrested leaders and fellow members as well as scrapping of the Bill.

It may be mentioned that the 11-hour bandh, which was successful in Assam and other northeastern States, affected the normal life in the region.

Along with other parts of the region, Lakhimpur district also responded strongly to the bandh called by North East Students Organization (NESO), All Assam Students Union (AASU) and 30 other organizations against the Citizenship Amendment Bill-2016.

The 11-hour bandh that started from 5 am evoked strong response from the people of the district resulting in the total shutdown of the commercial activities, and complete halt of transport services.

During the bandh hours, all the shops and business houses, banks and financial establishments, schools and colleges remained completely closed.
