The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Chutia Students’ Union (AACSU) on Tuesday staged protest against the signing of Memorandum of Agreement between the Assam government and the NHPC Ltd. for resuming work at 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project at Gerukamukh.
The Lakhimpur unit of AACSU burnt the effigy of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at North Lakhimpur.
The AACSU activists shouted slogans against the NHPC Limited, BJP and Assam government while protesting against the re-start of the construction of the dam at Gerukamukh.

Later in a press release, Lakhimpur AASCU president Jayanta Hazarika and secretary Amrit Das lashed out at the MoA signed between the NHPC Ltd and the Assam government.
The Chutia students’ union termed the MoA signing a betrayal to the greater cause of the people of Assam.
They also said strong protests would follow if the demand for shutting down of the project over river Subansiri, which is in a sensitive seismic zone, is not met.
“We condemn and deplore the stand taken by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ignoring the demands of the masses over the issue of LSHEP,” said Lakhimpur AACSU president Jayanta Hazarika.
“Ensuring of the safety and security of the people living in the downstream areas of the project should be the utmost priority of the State government and we will continue to fight for this,” said Amrit Das, secretary of Lakhimpur AACSU.
