Guwahati: The houselisting exercise for Census 2027 has been extended until October 31 in Assam’s Charaideo and Sivasagar districts following disruptions caused by the flood situation, according to a notification issued by the Registrar General of India.
The extension covers the houselisting operations and housing census (HLO) in the two districts, where several Census-related preparatory activities were suspended in August because of the floods.
The HLO in Assam was originally scheduled from August 17 to September 15. However, training programmes and other preparatory work in Charaideo and Sivasagar were put on hold amid the prevailing flood situation.
The Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner, Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, said in the notification that the house-listing period for the two districts had been extended to October 31, 2026.
The first phase of Census 2027 involves the HLO, under which structures, houses and households are systematically recorded to facilitate the subsequent population enumeration. The exercise is being carried out across States and Union Territories within a 30-day period specified by each jurisdiction.
The nationwide HLO phase is scheduled between April and September 2026, while population enumeration is slated for February 2027.
The decennial Census, originally due in 2021, was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
