North Lakhimpur police have seized a vehicle used by a gang of car lifters.

A team of police, led by assistant sub-inspector Rajib Das of Khelmati Town Outpost during a night patrolling on Wednesday, chased a vehicle on suspicion in North Lakhimpur, the headquarters of Lakhimpur district.

The vehicle, a Bolero, finally halted near the North Lakhimpur railway station but the persons inside it fled before the police team could catch them.

“The police team seized the vehicle, bearing registration No AS-07A-8559 along with some gadgets used by the car lifters,” said police sources.

“The recovered items included a master key, 14 numbers of ring wrench,  2 numbers of wheel wrench, 3 numbers of wheel kit wrench, 16 numbers of spanner wrench, cutter pliers and scissors, 3 numbers of brake shoe iron plate, 3 numbers of L wrench and two suspected registration certificates,” police sources said.

According to police, the seized vehicle is registered in the name of one Nazrul Hussain from Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district.

It may be mentioned that there was an attempt to lift a Bolero SUV from a residence in North Lakhimpur town in the wee hours of January 24 by using similar gadgets to break the lock of the vehicle.

Though the car lifters succeeded in igniting the Bolero on that occasion, they failed to take it away due to jamming of the entrance gate of the residence. Police are now investigating the cases.
