Assam: Brahmaputra flowing above danger level, 61 villages flooded in Jorhat

With the Brahmaputra flowing two metres above the danger level at Neematighat in eastern Assam’s Jorhat district, the number of villages affected by flood waters has risen to 61 on Saturday from 47 on Friday, affecting a population of 24896 in the district.

In the Jorhat West revenue circle, 19 villages have been affected, in Titabor revenue circle, nine villages have been affected and in the Teok and Jorhat East revenue circles, 15 and 18 villages have been inundated.

Cattle unable to feed are seen grazing by the roadside of National Highway 37.

A district administration official said that two relief camps have been set up under Jorhat West revenue circle and 197 people are inhabiting them.

Relief in the form of rice, lentils and salt has been extensively distributed and two relief distribution centres set up.

Ferry Services between Jorhat at Neematighat and to several ghats of the river island Majuli remain suspended for the fifth day on Saturday.

The Brahmaputra is flowing at 87.07 ( DL 85.04) at Neematighat but the two other rivers the Bhogdoi and Jhanji are flowing two and three metres below the danger levels, respectively.

The source said regarding infrastructure damage the Brahmaputra Duke at Fakuadoul in Gohain Gaon had slumped in Jorhat West revenue circle and that the Brahmaputra had over topped the road at Mudoijan at Teok revenue circle.

More 1200 hectare of crop land had also been affected.

At Jhanjimukh, one SDRF team has been kept in readiness for any eventuality.
