An AASU leader from Pathsala in Barpeta district on Thursday was threatened of dire consequences allegedly by some BJP workers for voicing against Citizenship Bill and waving black flag to Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The AASU leader from Pathsala, who has received threatening from BJP members, is Dip Ganguli, the office secretary of the Pathsala Anchalik unit of the AASU.

The act has been strongly condemned by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leadership of Barpeta district.

According to information, a group of six women, who identified themselves as members of the BJP Mahila Morcha (women wing), went to the residence of the office secretary of the Pathsala Anchalik Students’ Union, Dip Ganguli.

Talking to media persons here on Thursday, Dip Ganguli said, “Today, six women, who identified themselves as BJP Mahila Morcha, came to our home during my absence. They threatened my brother and called us Bangladeshi. They also asked why being a Bengali, I am supporting the AASU.”

He also said, “If I continue to voice against the CAB, they threatened that we will have to leave Assam.”

Ganguli also informed that he had waved black flag to Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma when the later visited Pathsala on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Assam minister Sarma and State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass went to Pathsala for felicitating the BJP candidates, who won the recently-held Panchayat elections.

AASU activists including Ganguli along with activists from various other organisations waved black flags to the minister.

The protesters also shouted slogans against the minister and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 when the convoy entered the venue of the event. Later, 13 protestors were arrested for waving black flags to the minister.

While condemning the act of threatening the AASU leader, Samudra Patgiri, general secretary of the Barpeta Zila Students’ Union warned the BJP not to indulge in such activities in future.

Patgiri asked the BJP workers to refrain from such activities.
