Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Debasish Sharma as its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election in Assamโ€™s Nagaon constituency.

The BJPโ€™s Central Election Committee approved Sharmaโ€™s candidature for constituency 09-Nagaon, according to an announcement issued by the partyโ€™s central office in New Delhi on Friday, September 11.

Former Nagaon District Commissioner Debashis Sarma and journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday.

The by-election is scheduled for October 6, and votes will be counted on October 9.

Pradyut Bordoloi vacated the Nagaon seat after leaving the Congress and joining the BJP. He had won the seat on a Congress ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and later won the Dispur seat in the recent Assembly polls.

Election preparations are also underway in Nagaon district, where more than 11.38 lakh voters across five Assembly constituencies are eligible to vote. The district will have 1,339 polling stations at 684 locations.

Voters above 85 years and persons with disabilities can opt for home voting, while eligible service voters can use postal ballots. Authorities have also directed residents in Nagaon and Morigaon to deposit firearms.

A total of 149 officials will be deployed for election duties, while two strong rooms will be established for the by-election.
