Dipanjali Kakoty Moran

A day after the Election Commission of India announced poll dates in Assam, the police on Saturday arrested Assam BJP leader Dipanjali Kakoty Moran in connection with assaulting a police official in Tinsukia.

Dipankali Kakoty, who allegedly assaulted Kakopathar police station sub-inspector Apurba Das in November last year, was arrested by a team of police from her Tinsukia residence.

Following the incident, the police had registered a case against Kakoty for abusive behavior, physical assault and obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duty.

However, police failed to arrest her for last the last four months.

Sources said police could not muster the courage to arrest Dipanjali due to “political pressure from Dispur”.

In the FIR against Kakoty on November 8, SI Das had alleged that the BJP leader had “flaunted her proximity” to chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, threatened to get the officer sacked and “assaulted” him

The BJP later suspended her for ‘maligning the image of the party’.

She was the executive member of the state committee of the saffron party.
