Doomdooma: Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) leader Irot Tanti on Saturday condemned the alleged exploitation of accident-affected families in connection with Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal (MACT) cases.
“Are some people actually waiting for accident victims to die? They call the relatives and neighbours of injured persons to ask whether the victim is still alive and allegedly promise substantial sums of money if the victim dies. It appears as though they are praying for the death of accident victims,” said Irot Tanti, president of the ATTSA Doomdooma regional committee.
The Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal (MACT) is a statutory body constituted under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, to adjudicate compensation claims arising from road accidents involving death, bodily injury or property damage.
Compensation awarded by the tribunal is intended to provide financial relief and support to victims and their dependents.
According to Tanti, some individuals are allegedly approaching accident-affected families and attempting to take advantage of the compensation process during difficult circumstances.
“If a similar tragedy strikes their own families, would they still have the same mentality? Is there no humanity left in their hearts? Such a mindset has no place in a civilised society,” he said.
His remarks come amid concerns within the Tea Tribes community over rising road accidents in Tinsukia district and calls for ethical conduct and support for victims and bereaved families.
