Dibrugarh: BJP state general secretary and Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) chairman Rituparna Baruah on Saturday said the government is making efforts to bring global pop icon Shakira to Dibrugarh under Assam’s concert tourism initiative.
Speaking to reporters in Dibrugarh, Baruah said planners have proposed Khanikor Stadium as the venue for the mega concert. “We are trying to bring mega pop star Shakira to Dibrugarh in line with the state’s concert tourism initiative. The government has recently launched a concert tourism policy to develop Assam into a tourism hub,” he said.
Baruah pointed to regional examples to underline the impact of concert tourism. He said Meghalaya has successfully hosted annual mega concerts, which boosted the tourism sector. “Inspired by that success, we recently organised a concert in Guwahati, which received an overwhelming response,” he added.
He further said the proposed Dibrugarh concert aims to position the Upper Assam city as a key destination through event-led tourism. “Our main objective is to develop Dibrugarh into a major tourist attraction through concert tourism,” he said.
