Several groups under the aegis of the Jorhat unit of All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) staged a sit-in protest against CAA in front of the deputy commissioner’s office here on Thursday.
The protestors holding banners and placards opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019 and shouted slogans against central and state governments run by the BJP.

The anti-CAA protestors also targeted the top Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders both in Delhi and Dispur.
The protestors also sought the inclusion of six communities of Assam in the list of Scheduled Tribes.

Several speakers, including singer and musician Jayanta Nath, former Jorhat Press Club president Niranjan Mahanta criticised both the BJP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for ignoring the massive protests by Assam’s civil society groups against the CAA.
The other organisations which joined the protest included Saudang Jatiya Parishad, Assam; Shilpi Samaj and the general public.

Meanwhile, the 3 youths, who had shown black flags to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal during his meeting after laying the foundation stone of a PHC at Cinnamara tea estate, were arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

They were produced before the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate at Jorhat on Tuesday.
The three youths — Dipankar Gogoi and Dimpol Das (AJYCP Borbheta unit president and secretary respectively) and Pritam Talukdar – were booked under Sections 353, 120 (B), 294, 295 and 114 of the IPC.
