Assam Assembly elections: Hojai MLA Shiladitya Dev quits BJP, to contest as Independent candidate

Giving a major blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Assam Assembly elections 2021, Hojai MLA Shiladitya Dev quit the party on Wednesday.

Shiladitya Dev submitted his resignation letter at the state headquarters of the BJP in Hengrabari.

He took the decision to quit the saffron party after the BJP denied party ticket to him.

While talking to the media, after submitting his resignation letter on Wednesday evening, the Hojai MLA said he would contest the ensuing Assam Assembly election as an Independent candidate.

He said he has been killed politically.

The BJP has given the party ticket to Ramakrishna Ghosh for contesting the Hojai Assembly seat.

Following the denial of party ticket to him by the BJP, the Hojai MLA took to social media to express his disappointment.

Shiladitya Dev on his Facebook page wrote: “Finally I have been kicked out from BJP.”

He also said the BJP had been planning from a long time to deny him ticket to contest in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

The BJP on Wednesday announced another list of candidates for three constituencies including Hojai.

Earlier on Wednesday, former deputy speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and sitting Silachar MLA, Dilip Kumar Paul resigned from the BJP after being denied party ticket for the ensuing Assm Assembly elections.

To contest the ensuing Assembly elections from Silchar constituency, the BJP has fielded Dipayan Chakraborty, one of the ‘close confidantes’ of Silchar Lok Sabha MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy.

Dilip Kumar Paul has also decided to contest the elections as an Independent candidate.
