Former Assam Assembly deputy speaker and BJP’s Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul on Wednesday resigned from the saffron party after being denied party ticket.

To contest the ensuing Assam Assembly elections 2021, the BJP has fielded Dipayan Chakraborty, one of the ‘close confidantes’ of Silchar Lok Sabha MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy.

A long-time cold war between Paul and Roy is known to all. Dilip Kumar Paul will now contest election as an independent candidate.

Paul, the two-time MLA from Silchar Assembly constituency, was unanimously elected as the deputy speaker of the Assam Assembly on June 3, 2016.

But he submitted his resignation letter to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on May 8, 2018 requesting him to relieve from the post of deputy speaker.

His resignation letter was later accepted by the speaker of the Assam Assembly.

Dilip Kumar Paul on Wednesday addressed a press conference and accused Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy of ‘dividing’ the BJP members for cheap political gains.

The former deputy speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly also accused Rajdeep Roy of being part of some nefarious syndicates in Barak Valley.
