Assam Assembly elections: Final phase records over 82% turnout

The third and final phase of the Assam Assembly elections, which ended on Tuesday recorded 82.29% voter turnout.

The turnout in the third phase is higher compared to the first and second phases of the Assam Assembly elections.

Nearly 81 per cent of the 73, 44,631 voters exercised their franchise in the second phase across 39 constituencies on April 1.

Around 80 per cent of 81, 09,815 voters cast their votes on March 27 in the first phase in 47 constituencies.

The third phase of the election which was held in 40 constituencies spread across 12 districts was largely peaceful except for a few sporadic incidents of violence.

Assam recorded the highest turnout compared to the four other states which went to the polls on Tuesday.

In West Bengal, a total of 77.68 percent of 78.5 lakh voters exercised their franchise till the end of the third phase of polling and in Tamil Nadu, where single-phase elections were held in 234 seats, 65.11 percent voter turnout was recorded.

Kerala recorded 69.95 percent polling while the Union Territory of Puducherry where a single-phase election was held registered a voter turnout of 78.03 per cent.

Significantly, in Assam, the highest turnout in the third was recorded in minority-dominated areas.

In Assam, the South Shalmara district recorded the highest turnout of 89.49 per cent at the time of polling.

This is followed by Dhubri, which is another minority-dominated district, recorded 89.20 per cent turnout, and Bilasipara, registered a turnout of 87.07 per cent.

Interestingly, turnout in the four seats in Guwahati–Jalukbari, Dispur, East Guwahati and West Guwahati, recorded low compared to the minority-dominated seats.

Jalukbari, which is represented by minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, recorded 79 per cent turnout, followed by Dispur at 72 per cent, East Guwahati at 69 per cent and West Guwahati at 69 per cent.
