Assam Assembly elections: Campaigning for Phase-I ends today

Campaigning for the first phase of Assam Assembly elections will end on Thursday.

According to rules, election campaigning ends in a constituency 48 hours before polling there ends. 

“The election campaign in 47 Assam Assembly constituencies under Phase I will come to an end at 6pm on March 25, i.e., 48 hours prior to the close of polls on March 27,” Election Commission of India (ECI) said. 

During this period, no person shall convene, hold or attend, join or address any public meetings, processions, etc, and display of election matter by means of television and similar apparatus, the ECI added.

“The result of any exit or opinion poll conducted shall not be published, publicized or disseminated in any manner by print, electronic or any other media at any time during the period of 48 hours ending with the hour fixed for the closing of the poll,” ECI said.

This ban will continue till voting in a single phase, or multiple phases and in all the states where ECI notified election simultaneously is finally over. 

“Violation will attract punishment of imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years, or with a fine, or with both,” ECI added. 

The election campaign for all three phases Assam Assembly election will end 48 hours prior to the close of polls, ECI said. 

This is in accordance with the Election Commission’s guidelines under the provisions enacted in Section 126 of Representation of Peoples’ Act, 1951, it said.

There are 264 candidates contesting in 47 constituencies going to polls in the first phase of Assam Assembly elections.

In the first phase of elections, there are a total of 81,09,815 general electors.  

Of these, 40,77,210 are male, 40,32,481 are female and 124 are transgenders. 

The Assam CEO office informed that the constituency which has the highest number of electors in Phase-I is Jonai in Dhemaji district with 449 polling stations and having 3,11,660 electors.
