Incumbent Tezpur MLA Brindaban Goswami, who filed nomination as an independent candidate for the upcoming Assam Assembly election, withdrew his nomination on Friday.
The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator filed nomination on March 9 after he was denied a ticket from the seat by the regional party.
The AGP has fielded Prithiraj Rava instead of Goswami from Tezpur.
Rava is the son of cultural icon and communist revolutionary Bishnu Prasad Rava.
Goswami decided to quit the AGP after being denied a ticket.
However, sensing trouble for the AGP if Goswami contests as an Independent candidate, party leaders reportedly requested Goswami to withdraw his nominations.
The former AGP minister, who remained adamant to contest from Tezpur as an Independent till Wednesday evening, decided to withdraw his papers at the end of the day.
However, Goswami has not mentioned whether he would extend support to the AGP candidate Rava.
