As the Lakhimpur district gets ready for the ensuing Assam Assembly election, a total of 7, 65, 635 voters are all set to decide the fate of 31 candidates, who are in the fray in the district.

The voters in Lakhimpur district will exercise their franchise in the first phase of the Assam Assembly election, on Saturday (March 27).

The district has four Legislative Assembly constituencies – 109 Bihpuria, 110 Naoboicha, 111 Lakhimpur and 112 Dhakuakhana (ST).

There are 31 candidates, including independents and leaders from various political parties, who are in the electoral fray in the four Assembly constituencies of Lakhimpur district.

In Bihpuria Assembly constituency, there are 1,49,883 voters, of which 76,140 are male and 73,746 are female.
On Saturday, the voters of Bihuria constituency will decide the fate of seven candidates including Congress’ Bhupen Kumar Borah, BJP’s Dr Amiya Kumar Bhuyan and Achyut Saikia of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

In Naoboicha Assembly constituency, the number of eligible voters is 2,21,144, of which 1,11,870 are male and 1,09,274 are female.

The voters of Naoboicha constituency will decide the fate of 12 candidates, including Congress’ Bharat Narah, Jayanta Khaund of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and independent candidate Rao Gajendra Singh, who was denied BJP ticket and Raijor Dal’s Azizur Rahman.

Naoboicha constituency has the highest number of candidates in Lakhimpur district this time.

In Lakhimpur Assembly constituency, a total 1,85,538 voters including 93,387 male and 92,151 female, will decide the fate of seven candidates, including Dr Joy Prakash Das of Congress, Manab Deka of BJP and Utpal Dutta of AGP.

In Dhakuakhana (ST) Assembly constituency, 2,09,070 voters, of which 1,05,430 are male and 1,03,640 are female, will decide the fate of five contesting candidates.

BJP minister and sitting MLA Naba Kumar Doley will face straight fight against Congress candidate Padma Lochan Doley in Dhakuaakhana constituency.

Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Lakhimpur district and Dhakuakhona sub-divisional administration for smooth and peaceful conduct of polls on Saturday.

Dry day has already been imposed in the district from 6 am on Thursday in the district which will continue for 48 hours.

An FIR was lodged on Thursday against Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president and agriculture minister Atul Bora for violation of election Model Code of Conduct while campaigning in Naoboicha Assembly constituency.

The FIR was filed by the returning officer of the district at North Lakhimpur police station vide letter No. ro-110/NBC/MCC/2, dated March 25, 2021.

The AGP president was booked for violating the Model Code of Conduct while campaigning for party candidate Jayanta Khound at Jubanagar HS Field in Naoboicha on March 22.

The FIR was lodged in response of a report submitted by the in-charge of MCC Cell, Assam Assembly Election, 2021 vide letter No. LAE/MCC/2020-21/112 dated March 25, 2021.

In that report, Atul Bora, a star campaigner for AGP’s Jayanta Khaund, was seen repudiating the secrecy of voting and intimidating the voters in a poll rally at Jubananar.

Further, Bora was also seen violating the Section 123(2)(a)(ii) of Representation of People Act, 1951 in his speech.
