With the advent of the monsoon season, Dibrugarh in Eastern Assam has geared up with all possible measures to tackle the menace of floods.
The Dibrugarh District Administration is working overtime to negotiate the affects of floods that wreaks havoc in the district every year.

Deepjyoti Hatikakoti, district project officer, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said: “We have identified 167 sites in Dibrugarh that can be used as relief camps. A total of nine SDRF personnel with seven rubber boat and six water drivers has been stationed in Dibrugarh. We are fully prepared to tackle the flood situation in Dibrugarh.”
“As per COVID-19 SOPs, hand sanitizers and masks will be distributed in relief camps for the inmates. Adherence to SOPs in the relief camps will be strictly monitored,” Hatikakoti said.
The ASDMA official added: “Recently tarpaulins were installed at Rongmola village. But those were washed away due to erosion. Erosions in the Rongmola village forced the villagers to take shelter in highlands. Most parts of the village have been swallowed by Brahmaputra.”

Every year, floods wreak havoc in many areas of Dibrugarh district, as a result of which, people take shelter in relief camps.
“From January till June 6, 2021 – Dibrugarh received a total of 495mm of rainfall, which is less compared to previous years,” Hatikakoti added.
He further said: “We have seen that flooding in urban areas of Dibrugarh have become a problem in recent times. Last year, almost entire Dibrugarh town was reeling under water. We have four diesel pumps and one 100mps electric pump to flush out rain out from the Dibrugarh town. In case of emergency in urban areas, Army will help us.”
“Two units of NDRF will be stationed in different areas for Eastern Assam districts. One unit will be stationed at Sadiya and other one will be at Charaideo. In case of emergency they will assist the Dibrugarh district administration,” Hatikakoti informed.
