Guwahati: A significant step was taken towards ensuring the health of the Subansiri River with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for a comprehensive Fisheries Management Plan.
The agreement between the Department of Fisheries, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and NHPC Ltd., which manages the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLP), was signed on June 6th.
The agreement was signed by Joyshil Taba, Director of Fisheries, and Manmeet Singh Chowdhary, General Manager (Environment) for NHPC Ltd., in the presence of Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director of SLP, NHPC Ltd.,
The plan focuses on the long-term sustainability of the river’s ecosystem. The Department of Fisheries will take the lead in developing hatcheries to raise fish species like the Golden Mahseer, Snow Trout, and various Indian Major and Minor Carps.
Additionally, fingerlings will be ranched in the Subansiri River upstream of the SLP dam to conserve the existing fish population.
Marking the official launch of this initiative, NHPC Ltd. and fisheries department officials released around 6,000 fingerlings of Indian Major Carps into the Subansiri River downstream of the dam.
The Fisheries Management Plan is expected to contribute significantly to the health of the Subansiri River and its fish populations, said an NHPC official.
