Guwahati: Armyworm attacks have affected around 435 hectares of paddy-growing land in Assam’s Sivasagar district, adding to the difficulties faced by farmers after the recent floods.
Agricultural officials have found the pest in several parts of the district, including Nitaipukhuri, Maharani, Namti Pathar and Jerenga Pathar.
Amguri has also reported infestations in different locations, while parts of Nazira and Dhupabor have been affected as well.
The pest attack comes as farmers are still dealing with the consequences of the flooding, raising the possibility of further crop losses.
The district Agriculture Department has begun measures to bring the infestation under control and has made pesticides available for farmers in affected areas.
Distribution is being carried out based on the requirements reported from different locations.
Fields facing heavier pest activity are also being treated with the help of drones. The department is using the equipment for aerial pesticide spraying so that larger areas can be covered within less time.
Officials are taking these steps to contain the armyworm infestation and prevent further damage to paddy fields across Sivasagar.
