Assam: AIUDF accuses Congress of ignoring BJP strongholds during LS polls

Guwahati: As the date of results for the Lok Sabha election approaches, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) launched a scattering attack on the Congress in Assam.

Speaking to the media, AIUDF leader and legislator Rafiqul Islam claimed that the Congress showed no efforts to defeat the BJP in the state.

He claimed that while the primary opposition of the Congress should have been the BJP, they were busy in fighting the AIUDF instead.

“We only contested for three seats while the BJP and its alliance on all the seats in Assam. It was important for the Congress to campaign in all seats where the BJP was strong. But, if you observe, it was seen that they instead focused on seats where the AIUDF had their candidates in”, Islam said.

He claimed that the Congress focused on Dhubri where AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal was a candidate but ignored the Guwahati seat where Mira Borthakur contested.

“They chose to let Akhil Gogoi hold a series of meetings in Dhubri but seemed to have ignored Mira Borthakur in Guwahati. I believe that had they focused on Mira Borthakur and Guwahati, they could have won this seat”, he said.

He claimed that Mira Borthakur who was among the very important candidates of the Congress herself claimed to have been left alone in the election campaigns.

Islam further added that if Congress wins even five seats in Assam, it would be a miracle claiming that the AIUDF would retain the Dhubri seat for sure.
