Swadesh Adhyayan, a new course based on Assam’s history and geography, will emerge as a major course of study after matriculation in the state.
A meeting was held in lower Assam’s Tangla town on Friday, where Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) chairman Dayananda alongside the council’s secretary Kamal Jyoti Gogoi brainstormed on ways to popularize the subject.

“Swadesh Adhyayan will help the students understand the history and geography of Assam in totality. The rich spiritual and cultural heritage as well as the intellectual rise of the state has been highlighted here. At the same time, the course will be helpful for the students appearing in competitive exams,” said Gogoi.
He added that the subject, which has been introduced in Class XI from this year, will fulfill the long-pending demand of including a course in the curriculum to teach students about their home state. Gogoi also pointed out that the decision by and University to give due recognition to the course has paved the way for students to even take it up at the undergraduate level in these colleges, reports TOI.
This will also encourage more students to study the subject at the plus-2 level, he said.

Top AHSEC officials are on a state-wide tour to encourage educational institutions to promote the new subject. Even though questions have been raised from certain quarters over introducing a subject with strong spiritual overtones while the party is in power in the state, sources in the AHSEC have dismissed these claims, arguing that the decision has not been influenced by any political consideration.
