The All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) observed Saturday as a ‘black day’ marking the 17th anniversary of the killings of eight protestors who died of bullet wounds during a 12-hour strike demanding ST status for Adivasis on July 25, 2003 at Paneri in Udalguri district.
Udalguri chapter president, Tinku Orang hoisted the organizational flag while village headmen of Kachibil Bagicha, Shiva Prasad Gour hoisted the black flag and paid floral tributes to the martyrs at a low ceremony event held at Kachubil Bagicha Primary School near Paneri T E in Udalguri district on Saturday.

President of AASAA, Pradeep Nag speaking on the ocassion said, “The Adivasi society remembers all the matyrs with great reverberance who were martyred for democratically raising their voices for the cause of the community.”
He further reiterated that ST is the primary demand of the Adivasis of Assam as despite the community being recognized as Schedule Tribe in rest of nation they are deprived of their constitutional safeguard in Assam and the Adivasis will continue their fight for ST status.
