Guwahati: Assam is set to significantly expand its power generation capacity with a proposed 3,200 MW Ultra Super Critical Thermal Power Project at Chapar in Dhubri district.
The project, being developed by Adani Power, will comprise four units of 800 MW each and is estimated to require an investment of around Rs 48,000 crore. The foundation stone for the project is scheduled to be laid at Chapar on September 20.
According to details released by the Assam government, the project is expected to create more than 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and over 5,000 employment opportunities after becoming operational.
The development will also require dedicated transmission infrastructure to evacuate the electricity generated by the plant. The Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL) has initiated work on the transmission network, including a proposed 400 kV Chapar-Rangia transmission line and associated substations.
Documents submitted to the Centre’s Expert Appraisal Committee for Thermal Projects state that the proposed plant will cover approximately 585 hectares. The land identified for the project comprises both government-owned and privately held plots.
The project is being planned as a major addition to Assam’s power infrastructure as the state seeks to increase its own electricity-generation capacity and reduce its reliance on power procured from outside the state.
