The Asom Chah Mazdoor Sanga (ACMS) have called for a bandh on January 8 following the two day strike called by the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) on January 8 and January 9 next year.

ACMS general secretary Rupesh Goala said this on Wednesday and added that while the ACMS supports the two day general strike on January 8 and 9, the ACMS have also called for a bandh of tea gardens on January 8.

“We have taken part in the convention organized by the trade union organizations at New Delhi on September 28 and raised various issues faced by the tea garden workers in Assam,” Goala said adding that the ACMS would ensure that the bandh is made successful in all the tea estates across the state.

Goala said that before the Lok Sabha elections of 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed several rallies in Assam and assured that the tea garden labourers would be paid a minimum wage of Rs. 350 per day. “However, the BJP led government in Assam is yet to fix the minimum wage of Rs. 350 per day to the tea garden labourers ,” Gowala said while urging the Prime Minister to make the announcement of Rs. 350 as minimum wage to the tea garden labourers before the new year.

While the tea garden workers in Brahmaputra Valley in Assam are now drawing a wage of Rs. 167 per day, the tea garden workers in Barak Valley are getting a wage of Rs. 145 only per day.

He further mentioned that the condition is far worst in the tea garden run by the Assam government. “While the labourers in company owned garden are receiving a wage of Rs. 167 per day now, the 26,000 workers under the 14 gardens of state owned Assam Tea Company Limited (ATCL) are receiving a wage of Rs. 115 only per day,” he said.
