The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Thursday staged a protest in front of Jorhat Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding scrapping of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019.

Leaders of several indigenous tribes and groups as well as Gana Adhikar Sangram Samity (GASS) took part in the protest which was organised by maintaining social distancing and wearing masks.

The protesters shouted slogans seeking withdrawal of the amended Citizenship Act and against the BJP-led governments both at the Centre and in Assam.

The protesters said due to the outbreak of COVID19, the stir against CAA remained suspended for few months but now with the resumption of the protest the Act will be intensified.

AASU state organising secretary Jul Khound, assistant general secretary of Jorhat district unit Bijoy Shankar Bordoloi, president and vice-president of Baligaon unit respectively – Pranjit Hazarika and Amrit Kumar Dhaluwa – and executive member of Jorhat sub-divisional unit Chandan Bora along with GASS, Jorhat district office-bearer Mridul Khound were among the leaders who participated in the protest.
