DIBRUGARH: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a protest at the Inspector of Schools (IS) office in Dibrugarh on Tuesday (May 28), highlighting irregularities in the supply of textbooks to students.
Students, holding placards and banners, voiced their grievances against the Assam government’s failure to provide textbooks as promised.
Rupjyoti Borthakur, the organising secretary of AASU in Dibrugarh, expressed concern over the situation, stating, “The government has failed to provide free textbooks to students. In many government schools, students have not received their textbooks.”
“Some schools requested 200 textbooks, but the education department only provided 80, which is inadequate,” he added.
Borthakur emphasized that this issue recurs annually, with the Assam education department consistently failing to provide textbooks.
“The government is jeopardizing the future of students. While they implement numerous schemes for the people, they consistently fail to provide textbooks for students,” he said.
Another AASU leader called for the resignation of Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu, holding him responsible for the textbook shortages.
“The BJP government has neglected the basic needs of students. Students are the future of our country; they should not have to endure such struggles,” the AASU leader stated.
Following the protest, AASU members submitted a memorandum to the Inspector of Schools, demanding urgent action to address the textbook shortages and ensure timely distribution to all students.
