Guwahati: All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Shankar Jyoti Baruah has resigned from his post following allegations of cheating, blackmailing, and mentally harassing a female student.

“I remain ever grateful to everyone for the support and cooperation extended to me until this moment,” he wrote.
Baruah has denied the allegations, asserting that he is a victim of false accusations, and has sought legal help to defend himself.
“I have been granted bail pending the outcome of the court proceedings. I believe in the justice system and trust that the truth will prevail. While I will address the allegations in court, I will refrain from engaging in personal attacks on social media,” he said.

A case was registered against Baruah under sections 376, 323, 506, and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNHS) based on a complaint filed by the female student at the Bhangagarh police station on September 7.
The complainant, a student at University Law College, Gauhati University, alleged that she had been in a long-term relationship with Baruah. She claimed that the AASU leader deceived her by breaking off their relationship to pursue another woman.
In her complaint, the student alleged that Baruah had promised to marry her and, on that pretext, engaged in a sexual relationship with her.
She further accused him of physical assault, death threats, and an attempt to strangle her at his residence.
According to the complaint, Baruah also threatened to kill both her and her family if she revealed the details of their relationship.
