As per a press communique by Monwar Hussain, central vice-president, AAMSU, it has been stated that especially people belonging to the minority community are being ‘targeted’.

He alleged that the authorities by serving fresh hearing notices for NRC credentials and asking them to appear within short notice are creating problems.

AAMSU further demanded to stop harassment in the name of sample re-verification that is carried out by the NRC authorities, in violation of the Supreme Court’s guideline and SOP.

The communique stated that the NRC authorities should give 15 days notice to appear for hearing as per Supreme Court’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

The authorities should immediately stop the practice of calling people for hearing 300 to 400 kilometres away from their home town and the hearing should be within their home town or nearby areas.

According to the communique, the students’ union has also requested through this memorandum to the home secretary, government of India to pay an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the next-of-kin of those killed and Rs five lakh who sustained injuries in the recent road accidents while moving towards NRC hearing centres in upper Assam.
