Three armed dacoits were killed in police firing in the wee hours on Sunday during an encounter at Bhotgaon in Assam’s Kokrajhar district when they were trying to rob the Allahabad Bank at Bhotgaon, said police.

Briefing media persons at Kokrajhar SP office on Sunday, Special DGP and BTR IGP in-charge LR Bishnoi said, “Three armed dacoits were killed in an encounter with police in the wee hours today when they were trying to loot the Allahabad Bank at Bhotgaon in Kokrajhar.”

Bishnoi said the dacoits, “A group of about 5-6 dacoits came to loot the Allahabad Bank located at Bhotgaon.”

“The police, receiving prior information, laid an ambush in the area. At around 2.30 am, the robbers were on way to the bank when the police team intercepted them and asked them to surrender. But the dacoits instead of surrendering tried to run by firing at the policemen,” Bishnoi said.

“The police in retaliation opened fire at the dacoits in which three of the dacoits were seriously injured.”

“They were brought to Kokrajhar Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital where the doctors declared them dead,” he added.

The other dacoits managed to escape taking advantage of darkness, the top police official said.

The three deceased have been identified as Sirajdullah Sheikh of South Salmara, Aminul Haque and Monuar Hussain, both of Goalpara.

Two 7.65 mm pistols along with a magazine, 8 live rounds and 6 empty cartridges, one Glamour bike, one auto rickshaw, one oxygen cylinder, one LPG cylinder, torch and pipes were recovered from their possession, said Kokrajhar superintendent of police Prateek Thube.

Thube said a combined search operation is going on to arrest the other members of the gang.
