Assam: 25 Bangladeshi nationals lodged in Dhubri district jail released

The 25 Bangladeshi nationals, who were lodged in Dhubri district jail since May 6 for breaching terms and conditions of their visas, have finally been released on Wednesday.

The Bilasipara Sub Division Court of Dhubri district passed an order regarding their release on Saturday.

District official sources said that the development came following a request from Bangladesh.

As per reports,  Dhubri court on Saturday dropped the charges against the 25 Bangladeshi nationals and ordered their release.

The 25 men hail from Kurigram district of Bangladesh. They had come to India on tourist visas but they were working as fishermen and farmworkers in different districts of Upper Assam.

On May 3, Dhubri police arrested total 26 Bangladeshi nationals at  Bahalpur- the inter-district border of Dhubri- when they were on their way home by hiring two vehicles from Jorhat.

Later, the Dhubri police lodged an FIR with the Chapar Police Station bearing case no 174/2020 registered under Section 14 (B) of The Foreigners Amendment Act 2004 Read With Section 12 ( 1-A) (3) the Passport Act 1967 and since then they were passing their days in Dhubri jail.

They intended to enter Bangladesh through the Changrabandha check post in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal.

Meanwhile, one Bokul Mia (57), out of 26 Bangladeshi died during his stay in Dhubri jail on July 1.

His body was sent to his native land after the completion of the due formalities by Dhubri district administration.
