A 19-year-old youth allegedly committed suicide on Saturday night in Assam’s Biswanath district after being beaten up by police for ‘violating lockdown norms’.
The youth has been identified as Hemanta Bora, a resident of Nambaghmara village in Biswanath district.
According to locals, police thrashed him and smashed his mobile phone on Saturday when he went to buy some medicines for his ailing mother during the curfew hours.
“Hemanta’s mother has been unwell for the last few days. So he came out from home and went to buy some medicine for his mother. He was brutally beaten up by local cops. He was very upset after being beaten up by the policemen,” said a local resident.
Bora, a daily wage earner, hanged himself from a mango tree near his house.
The Assam government has imposed ‘total lockdown” to contain further spread of Covid-19.
