Guwahati: At least 11 animals drowned while 65 others were rescued in less than three days as a significant portion of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) has been inundated by flood waters.
As many as 10 hog deer and an infant otter have died of drowning in the park between Monday (July 1) and Wednesday noon (July 3).

On the other hand, a total of 42 hog deer, otter, sambar and scops owls two each and Indian hare and jungle cats one each, respectively, were rescued by the park authorities during this period.
While 14 hog deer, one Indian hare and two sambar have been released in the wild after treatment, 22 hog deer, two scops owls, and otter and jungle cat one each, respectively, are still being treated.

Out of the total 233 anti-poaching camps under the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 173 have been inundated till Wednesday noon by the surging flood waters, of which, nine have been vacated by the forest guards manning the camps.
Meanwhile, the river Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at Dhansirimukh, Numaligarh and Neamatighat on Wednesday noon adding to the famed park’s woes.
