Assam: 10 more detention centres for holding illegal foreigners

With the publication of the final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) around the corner, the Assam Government is planning to set up ten more detention centres in the State.

The sites for construction of these detention camps have been decided but still waiting for final approval from the concerned authorities.

After the final list of the NRC is out, there are assumptions that the number of illegal foreigners will increase so the construction of more detention centres has been planned.

Currently, there are six detention camps operating in the state. Moreover, another detention camp is being constructed at Goalpara at a cost of 46 crore with a capacity of holding over 3000 illegal foreigners.

A number of persons living in the state had been declared as foreigners by foreigner’s tribunal in the past months.

Army Veteran Mohammad Sanaullah, the retired captain of Indian Army was declared a foreign national by a Foreigners’ Tribunal on May 28 and was sent to a detention camp in Goalpara.

He was recently granted interim bail by Gauhati High Court. After hearing the arguments of senior advocate Indira Jaising, assisted by advocates HRA Choudhury, P K Deka, Aman Wadud and Syed Burhanur Rehman, a bench of Justice Manojit Bhuyan granted interim bail to the Kargil war veteran and issued notices to all the respondents including Central government, Assam government, defence ministry, authorities of theNational Register of Citizens (NRC) and the investigating officer of the Assam police in the case.
