Another female leopard was caged by the forest officials in the town Numaligarh Refinery township in the morning on Sunday.

It may be mentioned that a female leopard was caged from the same area in the township under Golaghat district a week back.

The Deopahar Reserved Forest is located near the Numaligarh Refinery township.

Deopahar Reserved Forest is an important habitat for leopards.

The Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) authorities expanded the township by clearing a part of the Deopahar Reserved Forest and constructed a concrete wall.

The Golaghat district administration in an eviction drive made the reserved forest encroachment-free by breaking the wall, which was constructed by the NRL authorities, on March 13, 2018.

The presence of leopards is also seen in the tea garden areas near the Deopahar Reserved Forest.

Following complaints by the residents of the township of witnessing leopards in the area, the Golaghat Forest Department officials placed a cage in the area recently.

The female leopard, after being captured in the cage, was later released by the forest officials in the Deopahar Reserved Forest.

Exactly a week ago on Sunday last, a female leopard was caged in a trap laid by Forest Department officials at the Numaligarh Refinery township under Golaghat district of Eastern Assam.

The female leopard was caged after it was straying into the Numaligarh refinery township for a few days in search of food.

The Numaligarh Refinery authorities had informed the Forest Department officials about the movement of the female leopard in the township.

The Refinery authorities also urged the Forest Department authorities to take immediate steps to trap the big cat that was unleashing a reign of terror in the entire area.

Accordingly, the Forest Department officials of the Numaligarh division under the Golaghat circle laid the trap by installing an iron cage in the area where the feline was frequently spotted. Finally, they were rewarded when the female leopard got trapped in the iron cage in the wee hours of March 18, 2018.
