In yet another possible setback for the Assam Congress, another MLA from the party is all set to join the BJP.

As per reports, the first time Congress MLA Bhaskar Baruah is likely to resign from the grand old party to join the BJP.

Baruah, who won from Congress’ pocket borough Titabar in upper Assam, has already had a meeting with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in this regard.

Sources said chief minister Sarma has asked the 60-year-old Titabar MLA to join the BJP at the earliest.

In the recent Assembly elections, the Congress party fielded Baruah from the Titabar seat following the death of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and he managed to win the seat.

Titabar is known as Congress bastion and former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi had represented the Titabar LAC from 2001 till his demise.

Interestingly, MLA Baruah, who was a businessman and tea grower, on Monday, joined a BJP meeting in Jorhat, which was organized as part of the saffron part’s Jan Ashirbad Yatra.

Former chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and several senior BJP leaders attended the meeting.
