Guwahati: Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Tuesday said a movement to remove the BJP from power in Assam has begun, while addressing a rally organised by the Opposition Unity Forum at Sarbhog in the BhawanipurโSorbhog constituency.
Gogoi accused the BJP of failing to protect Assamโs interests and alleged that Clause 6 of the Assam Accord remains unimplemented. He further claimed that instead of identifying and deporting illegal foreigners, the government has enabled their settlement in the state.
He also alleged growing public resentment against corruption linked to families in power and what he described as authoritarian governance. โThe people will take a decisive stand against corruption and any attempt to weaken democratic institutions,โ he said.
Referring to alleged land-related irregularities, Gogoi remarked that voters would weigh such issues carefully. โThe people will now decide whether 1,250 bighas or 12,000 bighas carry more weight,โ he said, in an apparent reference to land controversies.
On the issue concerning singer Zubeen Garg, he alleged that the circumstances surrounding the artisteโs death indicated a planned act and claimed that justice had not been delivered. He added that if justice is not ensured, people should reconsider extending support to the ruling party. He also alleged that the singerโs memorial has not yet been constructed, calling it a sign of continued neglect.
Commenting on a recent incident in Sivasagar where newspapers were allegedly burnt in public, Gogoi termed it an attack on press freedom. He further claimed that journalists are facing threats to their lives, and said there was evidence of such intimidation.
Leaders and supporters of allied Opposition parties were present at the rally as part of a joint campaign ahead of the Assembly elections.
