Just a day ahead of the Panchayat polls, a 48-year-old Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) leader was on Monday night killed by unidentified assailants at Ganabinna in Lower Assam’s Bongaigaon district.
Police officials said the slain AGP leader has been identified as Jamdahar Hafeez and he was a former ward member.
He hailed from No 6 Jamdoha village under Kokila police outpost in Bongaigaon district.
According to family members of Hafeez, he went to Ganabinna on Monday night to watch a cultural programme.
“He was stabbed with a sharp weapon around 11.30 pm while he went out from the venue to urinate,” one of his family members said.
Police have nabbed one person, Dilwar Ali Mondol, a resident of Kirtanpara area under Abhayapuri police station, suspecting his involvement in the incident.
Bongaigaon SP Hridayjit Barman said a dispute over a plot of land seems to be one of the reasons for his murder.
“We are investigating into the incident. He clashed with Dilwar and some other locals over a plot land few days ago. So land dispute might be a reason for his murder,” Barman said.
Few days back, Hafiz was arrested by police for allegedly assaulting few villagers over the land dispute.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination.
