The Dibrugarh district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), on Monday, gheraoed the office of Joint Directorate of Health Service in Dibrugarh in protest against ‘unethical’ practices of a section of private nursing homes and diagnostic laboratories in Dibrugarh.

The AASU members took out a procession from Chowkidinghee and then gheraoed health services office for an hour demanding regularization of the private nursing homes and diagnostic laboratories.

“The private nursing homes and diagnostic laboratories in Dibrugarh are involved in unethical practice by charging exorbitant rates while conducting medical tests in the name of treatment,” alleged AASU, Dibrugarh district president – Abani Kumar Gogoi.

He said, “The health department has failed miserably to control the unethical practice of the private nursing homes and laboratories. They are making money by looting the public. Despite that, the health service of Dibrugarh is doing nothing against them.”

“Patients from upper Assam come to Dibrugarh for treatment, but it is seen that private nursing homes and laboratories charge exorbitant rates. It is unethical. Most of the laboratories don’t even have proper documents. Technicians, who work in those laboratories don’t have proper degree or certificate,” Gogoi alleged.

“If within 20 days, the health department fails to take steps against these nursing homes and diagnostic labs then we would place such laboratories and private nursing homes under lock and key,” Gogoi said.

The AASU protestors also submitted a memorandum to joint director of health services to take necessary steps against the “unethical practice”.
