Dhrubajyoti Saikia, a 27-year-old youth from Folongoni area in upper Assam’s Golaghat district has volunteered to offer himself for conducting trial of Covid-19 vaccine on his body.

In a letter addressed to the deputy commissioner of Golaghat district, Saikia expressed his willingness to donate his body to the government for conducting clinical trial of Covid19 vaccine.

“We are all aware of the catastrophe caused by Covid-19. At this time of distress, I am offering my bit to help fight this deadly virus. I am well aware of the risk associated with the test of vaccine on my body even though I am doing this for the betterment of the society at a large,” Saikia said.

“We really appreciate the endeavor of this young boy and have forwarded his application to the health ministry for doing the needful,” said Bibhas Chandra Modi, deputy commissioner of Golaghat.

Recently, the World Health Organisation has given its approval for a human challenge exercise that will involve over 20,000 individuals voluntarily getting infected with SARS-CoV-2 to advance vaccine development efforts.

According to the WHO, human challenge studies have contributed enormously to scientific knowledge that has paved the way for the development of treatments, medicines and vaccines.
