A 24-year-old man has been arrested from Assam for allegedly harassing a Delhi-based woman and threatening to defame her by making her pictures viral on social media.
Delhi Police officials said the accused, Chandan Nath, who works in a mobile shop at Mangaldoi in Darrang district of Assam has been arrested.
Chandan Nath, who claimed to be a graduate in Political Science, harassed the Delhi-based woman via chat and video calls and later threatened her, police said.
Delhi Police took up the case on September 30 after a complaint was lodged at Malviya Nagar police station.
The victim alleged that an unidentified man was harassing her through chats and video calls on social media.
The accused had also threatened to make her pictures viral on WhatsApp to defame her, police said.
Atul Thakur, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) of Delhi Police said, a case was registered under section 354 A, 509 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and IT Act.
During the investigation, Delhi Police managed to locate the mobile number of the accused and he was zeroed down at Mangaldoi in Darrang district of Assam.
A Delhi Police team was rushed to Mangaldoi, and arrested the culprit, who was later identified as Chandan Nath.
The mobile phone used by the accused has also been recovered, Thakur said. It is being suspected that Chandan Nath was involved in many such criminal cases.
During investigation, Chandan Nath confessed that he has a habit of making friends on social media platforms, police officials said.
After befriending them, he later intimidated them by threatening to make their chats and pictures viral on social media platforms to defame them, the DCP said.
