Two women journalists, who were arrested by Tripura police for reporting on the recent communal violence in the State, were granted bail by a local court on Monday.

Journalists Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha, working with HW News Network, were granted bail by the Udaipur CJM court on a bail bond of Rs 75,000 each.

The court has reportedly asked them to appear before Kakraban Police Station in Tripura where the case was registered.

Assam Police on Sunday detained the two journalists in Karimganj while they were on their way to Silchar from Tripura.

They were on Monday arrested by Tripura police based on a complaint filed by a VHP supporter with Fatikroy Police Station in Tripura.

The Indian Women’s Press Corps had demanded the release of the two journalists arrested by Tripura Police.

The scribes’ body in a statement said it stands in solidarity with Samriddhi K. Sakunia and Swana Jha, the two women journalists, who have been “harassed, intimidated and detained for doing their job”.

The Editors Guild of India had denounced police action against the journalists and demanded their immediate release.
