Over 12 crore populations in India affected by disability: Activist

More than 12 crore populations in India are affected by disability, said NGO activist Arup Jyoti Kalita.

He said if one person with disability exists in a family, then whole family is affected.

Kalita, who is Hon. Jt. Secretary of SAKSHAM, North Assam Chapter, said this while participating in an e-conference jointly organized by Assam Law College Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff Association (ALCTNTSA) & IQAC, Dr. R.K.B. Law College, Dibrugarh in association with SAKSHAM, North Assam Chapter.

The conference was started with the welcome address delivered by Gautami Dutta, Principal of RKB Law College.

Gautami emphasized on the need to organize this kind of conference to sansitize particularly the students who are persuing their legal education in various colleges of Assam and the people in general.

Monuj Kr. Tamuli (join secretary, SAKSHAM, North Assam Chapter and Training & Placement Officer, Dibrugarh University) spoke about the plight of specially able persons in North Eastern Region of the country by sharing his personal experience.

Tamuli, who is a visually impaired person with complete visual impairment, said he has been facing lot of discriminations in his own life.

Sukumar K, National Organizing Secretary, SAKSHAM participated as one of the key resource person and deliberated on the ‘Disability in India: Issues and Challenges’.

Sukumar made a detailed presentation on the disability scenario in the entire country and he stressed the fact that the attitude of the society is primarily responsible for the pathetic conditions of the specially-able persons in the country.

He said the specially able people forms a sizable section of our populations and this socially disadvantage community has promising creative and productive abilities.

There several instances wherein specially able person have done commendable work in their professional life in spite of their physical limitations.

Advocate Ashok Kr Dwivedi, Advocate, Allahabad High Court spoke on different provisions of the disability act, which safeguard the interest of the specially able persons by invoking the 2016 legislation.
