Barely two months into her marriage, a 24-year-old woman was allegedly burnt alive by her in-laws because her family could not meet their dowry demands.
Family sources said Bitumani Hazarika, who got married to Kiriti Barua of Naharbari under Mangaldai police station in Darrang district, has been facing harassment at the hands of her in-laws since her marriage. She was killed on Monday.
Darrang SP Sreejith T said that police have registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested Duti Ram Barua and Kushal Barua, father-in-law and brother-in-law of the victim respectively.
Husband Kirti Barua, a jawan of the 3rd APBN, who is currently posted at Shyampur Police Station of the district, is absconding, the SP told Northeast Now.
Tilak Hazarika, father of the victim and a resident of Jhakuapara, Rowta in Udalguri District lodged an FIR at Mangaldai Police Station in connection with the incident.
SP Sreejith T said that the charred body of the woman was recovered from the bathroom of her in-laws’ house around 3 pm on Monday.
Police also detained mother-in-law and sister-in-law of the victim and recorded their statement following post mortem of the body.
According to the family members of the victim, Bitumani married to Kiriti just two months back after a long-term relationship.
