The CBI court in Assam has sentenced three cashiers and one security guard of the Gauhati University with five years of imprisonment and fine to the tune of Rs five lakhs for misappropriation of cash over Rs 34 lakhs in 2003.

A statement issued by the central investigating agency said this on Monday while adding that the CBI special judge has convicted Dipak Kalita, Nagen Ch Sarma, Kumud Barman, and Ramgopal Prasad and sentenced them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of five years and fine to the tune of Rs five lakhs.
While Nagen Ch Sarma and Kumud Barman were the then chief cashiers of the University, Ramgopal Prasad used to be the then junior cash collector in the cash section of Accounts Department of the University.
Dipak Kalita used to be an armed guard in the cash section of Accounts Department of the University.

While the court sentenced Barman and Sharma to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of five years and fine of Rs five lakhs and in default another imprisonment for one year for their involvement in misappropriation of funds; Dipak Kalita and Ram Gopal Prasad have been sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of five years and fine of Rs two lakhs each and in default imprisonment for another one year.
A case was registered against the four in 2003 at the Jalukbari police station which was later transferred to the CBI. The allegation against them was that the accused have hatched criminal conspiracy and misappropriated cash amount of Rs 34,67,816.58 of Gauhati University by falsely showing credit of the amount to the account of Gauhati University.
