Tezpur known as the cultural capital of the state is, seemingly, plagued by the menace of drug abuse and peddling.

Sonitpur Police in the last few days nabbed four drug peddlers during their search operation.

Three of these drug peddlers have been send to judicial custody. One Pritam Sarkar, arrested on Monday night confessed that two persons, Diki and Miku, have been running a drug trade in and around Tezpur town over the last few months.

Pritam has been consuming drugs like brown sugar from Tezpur at the cost of Rs 500 per gram.

He also mentioned that cases of drug abuse and arrest of a number of youths involved in drug abuse and peddling in the last few months paint a rather bleak picture of the town leaving the residents worried.

The accused Pritam when quizzed by the media on Tuesday said, “Drugs, especially, brown sugar is supplied in Tezpur from Guwahati. Once we receive the consignment in different shapes, we distribute it to the consumers as per our contract. College students studying here and the youths coming from different places across the state and staying in various PGs and rented houses also seek these substances from us.”
