Even as the protests rife in the state over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonwal on Monday called upon the AASU to play an active role in the high level committee formed by the Centre on Clause 6 of Assam Accord.
“The high level committee constituted by the Central Government for safeguarding the cultural and linguistic identity of indigenous people of Assam through Clause 6 of Assam Accord is a golden opportunity for the state and the AASU must play an active role in the committee.
“I am a son of the soil and I will not allow the Assamese people to get marginalised in their own place. Let us all join hands to find an acceptable, rational and practical solution to this important issue,” Sonowal said, according to an official communiqué.
He was speaking at the foundation laying of 550-bed Tinsukia Medical College at Sukan Pukhuri, Tinsukia which would be built for a total amount of Rs 405 crore.
Saying that the state government believes in consensus and not conflict, Sonowal called on the people to remain alert to thwart designs of disrupting the age old harmony in the society.
He also asserted that Assamese race was strong and its existence could not be threatened by foreigners and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been working with sincerity for the development of the state and region.
Stating that Tinsukia will play a vital role in strengthening the business ties with South East Asian countries under Act East Policy, the chief minister said that once completed Tinsukia Medical College would be able to cater to the medical needs of the people of upper Assam and many districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
Speaking at the programme, Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that due to the state government’s relentless efforts to improve the health sector, the number of medical colleges in the state is going to be increased from six to 14 soon. Tinsukia Medical College is the 12th medical college of the state and foundation stone of two more such medical colleges would be laid at Nalbari and Karimganj next, he informed.
