'Three Idiots'

Social media users in Assam are making mockery of the AGP trio – Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta and Phani Bhushan Choudhury –  for going back into the BJP camp. Memes and comments on the trio have flooded social media decrying their decision to join the saffron party. The latest is a meme circulated on WhatsApp terming the said AGP leaders as ‘Three Idiots’ with the RSS khaki shorts as their attire – an indicator that they are kowtowing to the saffron party and dancing to the tune of RSS.

The idea of the ‘Three Idiots’ meme has been taken from the 2009 coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Raj Kumar Hirani of the same name. The movie featured Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and the very gorgeous Kareena Kapoor and went to become a huge blockbuster.

It is a different matter that Aamir Khan & Co was ingenious enough in the movie, however, the AGP trio has been called names such as “betrayers”. The decision of Bora, Mahanta and Choudhury to rejoin BJP has drawn the ire of the people of the state as the saffron party is hell bent on passing the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 (CAB) which goes against the interests of the indigenous people of Assam.

People are at their wit’s end over this ‘bitter divorce-quick remarriage’ episode of AGP-BJP. Even senior party leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is dead against the alliance. In fact, even grassroot workers of the regional party are very upset over the trio’s decision to go back into the BJP fold.

AGP party workers in Jorhat burnt posters of the three on Friday and pulled down banners and posters from the party office. As “power hungry” Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta and Phani Bhushan Choudhury want to ride piggy back to power again with the BJP in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, party workers feel that it will have a detrimental effect on the regional party’s image. This factor is worrying former Assam chief minister Prafulla Mahanta too.
